Emeryville School Supe in Hot Water

Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 8:06 AM

In today's SFGate, education reporter Nanette Asimov has an excellent and devastating story about how Emeryville Unified School District Stephen J. Wesley (chosen over more than two dozen other applicants and hired last spring) falsified his resume, claiming (among other things) that he has a University of Chicago master's degree and a Ph.D, which he does not.

And here is the joyous text of a press release issued by the school district upon Wesley's selection:

"Wesley's doctoral work and research at Columbia University in Educational Psychology, combined with his vision of excellent schools, inspired his interest and enthusiasm for the new challenge of leading the Emery Unified School District as the new Superintendent. The focus of his tenure in Emeryville includes student achievement, academic programs, curriculum and instruction; clarification and implementation of the District's Guiding Principles, mission, and direction; communications and partnerships with parents, City, community and business allies; responsible fiscal and business operations; and, facilities renovation and development.

"According to Emery USD's School Board President, Joshua Simon, 'Our district has come a long way since the ending of our State administration. Our Board supports Dr. Wesley in further accelerating our progress towards becoming a model, high performing school district with a focus on science education and the integration of the arts across all academic disciplines. With him, we will continue to strengthen the partnerships that power our students' success while building programs that increase the health and sustainability of the entire Emeryville community. We are delighted to select Stephen Wesley to lead Emery Unified School District forward!'" And we tell kids that lying is wrong.
