Emergence: the East Bay Edition Club Critics' Pick Staff Pick

When: Fri., Sept. 26, 9 p.m. 2008
Price: $10

Twelve years ago, the concept of incorporating live instrumentation into hip-hop was still pretty novel -- novel enough, in fact, that some hip-hop bands rose to great acclaim before the members really knew how to play their instruments. This may still be the case in some parts of the world, but in the Bay Area -- home to Crown City Rockers, the Broun Fellinis, Realistic Orchestra, FlipSyde, and the Coup -- hip-hop bands are held to fairly high standards. The funk band Dynamic, the well-deserving winner of this year's Battle of the Bands competition at the Great American Music Hall, combines the talents of rapper-drummer Darian Gray, soul singer Kimiko Joy, a tight rhythm section, and two sought-after local horn players, taking the party-jam template and giving it real musical depth. Dynamic plays Friday, September 26 on a not-to-miss billing with the Kev Choice Ensemble called "Emergence" at the Shattuck Down Low (2284 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley). 10 p.m., $10.
