Comedy drama
Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey are the main reasons to see this left-handedly “historical” riff, in which Elvis Presley (Shannon) drops by the White House in 1971, unannounced, and gets an Oval Office meeting with President Richard Nixon, on the subject of rampant drug use by American youth. The mind boggles. Neither actor really resembles his subject, but director Liza Johnson’s masquerade party – written by Joey Sagal, Hanala Sagal, and former actor Cary Elwes – is nevertheless a devilishly funny comedy, the nutty step-grandchild to Dr. Strangelove. Elvis and Nixon’s real-life encounter will never be taught in officially approved histories, but it’s more to the absurdity-of-power point than ninety-five percent of “serious” presidential dramas -- a trip to the daffy outer limits where celebrity gossip meets politics and approaches total lunacy. Nice support playing by Alex Pettyfer, Colin Hanks, and Johnny Knoxville (87 min.).
