Anne, a preoccupied, accident-prone magazine writer with spouse trouble (Juliette Binoche), gets overly involved with her feature-story subjects, a pair of Parisian prostitutes: Charlotte (Anaïs Demoustier), a freckle-faced girl-next-door type; and Polish immigrant Alicja (Joanna Kulig), a chilly blond vodka-drinker with a cruel streak. And so director Malgorzata Szumowska, a Polish product herself – working with a screenplay she wrote with Tine Byrckel – whips up a cool and trendy portrait of modern European urban discontent, anchored by Binoche’s histrionic performance. Naturally there are hidden emotional currents running through the two escorts, who alternately attract and repel the apprehensive Anne. But Szumowska’s drama isn’t about journalism – it’s about female sexuality, with a side course of rootlessness. The three actresses put on a show (including graphic sex scenes), but it’s a small show. (96 min.)
