Contemptuous, deadpan neo-noir, Russian style. A rich, stingy old man (Andrey Smirnov) who’s preparing to write his will; his dissatisfied wife and former nurse, the title character (Nadezhda Markina); Elena’s no-good, sponging son (Aleksey Rozin) and his shiftless family; the old man’s bitter daughter, who seems to trust no one (Yelena Lyadova). Stir and serve well chilled, with a thin layer of Philip Glass music score floating on top. Director Andrey Zvyagintsev (The Return), working from a scenario by Oleg Negin, imbues the low-keyed mayhem with a patient, almost bland tone, but the menace is always visible just beneath the surface. (109 min.)
