Re: “The Battle for Richmond's Soul

The saddest thing about this race is this is the best we can do, apparently.

While I don't agree with much of what Butt has done over the years (he is nothing if not a political beast), the alternative is Bates, who would rather see Richmond awash in toxic air, chemical waste and polluted groundwater because he can't see past the oil industry and chemical plants. That kind of thinking is utterly outdated. I don't blame him—50 years ago, that WAS where the big money was. The problem is that it got us saddled with chemical plants, oil refineries, railroads, landfills, and oil-soaked scrapyards on what SHOULD have been prime real estate. Trust me… it burns me up every day looking at the hills of Marin from our lovely hills off Richmond Parkway, seeing that geographically and geologically we have a SUPERIOR shoreline than Marin, and we covered it with a landfill, oil and chemical plants, and wrecking yards! WHAT A WASTE.

Of course, no one knew 75 years ago what might happen in the Bay Area. Nobody predicted the tech boom. Unfortunately, that's where Bates got his ideas and he hasn't evolved past them.

Bates is stuck in a very narrow-minded past and should he become mayor, Richmond would further become a polluted mess full of sick children and adults.

So I'll hold my nose and vote Butt. (yeah, I said it…)

As for Uche Uwahemu… More like Uche Umawhe-WHO!?? I haven't heard or seen anything from him. I have no idea who he is and what he stands for. If you want to be taken as a "new blood" third candidate, you have to work a lot harder than he has to get his voice out there. I'm sorry, but given the low level of "dark horse" candidates we've had in the past, I'd rather deal with a devil I know than one I don't.
