In a stripped-down narrative style with a multitude of characters, French director Mia Hansen-Løve – working from a screenplay she wrote with her brother, Sven Hansen-Løve – traces the fictional career of a Parisian club DJ named Paul (Félix de Givry) and his career as a dance music innovator from the early Nineties well into the 21st century. Stirred in amidst numerous musical interludes on dance floors, Paul aims for a musical mood poised somewhere “between euphoria and melancholy,” an apt definition of his personal life. With more than a tinge of reality and unhindered by a “big contest” or major love story, this portrait of an era and a milieu is as Euro-cool, and as distanced, as Paul’s chosen musical style, a variation on Chicago house. The large cast includes Greta Gerwig, Pauline Etienne, Golshifteh Farahani, and Roman Kolinka as some of Paul’s friends and lovers (131 min.).
