Re: “Berkeley High May Cut Out Science Labs

This is a prime example of the soft bigotry of lowered expectations. In the military, we try to set the bar high and hold everyone to the same standards. Sure enough, people rise to meet those standards. Lowering the bar never works and signals to people that they are not good enough. The only way for everyone to do well is to challenge them to excel. To those who want to lower the bar: why? do you doubt the will and capacity of those with different skin tones. I don't think your intent is to be bigoted, but the results are the same. If you ask anyone who has ever run a successful team, organization, or business they will tell you that people do best when challenged. The message to present when people fail to meet those goals (which of course happens) should be: get back up on the horse and keep going. In the Army, we say things like, "Drive on with your Airborne Mission," to let people know that even if they stumble or falter, they need to keep pushing and moving forward- because the bar will not be lowered. Too simplistic? Sometimes the best things are.
