Documentary, Music
With a wealth of rare concert and interview footage and the full blessing of the Zappa Family Trust, this rousing profile of the late rock guitarist, classical composer, Mother of Invention, and ideal interview subject reveals Zappa to have been a true renaissance man beneath his bearded-pirate guise and madcap stage antics. German filmmaker Thorsten Schütte naturally takes the European view of Zappa as a misunderstood genius, but that’s always leavened by Zappa’s own dry, sardonic utterings. Zappa fans will love this, and pop culture mavens in general will appreciate his wry commentary on America in the latter half of the 20th century. And the music, don’t forget the music (90 min.)
