Comedy, Romance
Noel Coward’s England is a place in which a young playboy (Ben Barnes) brings his beautiful, willful, race-car-driver wife (Jessica Biel) to meet the family in their palatial country home, whereupon the new wife and the imperious mother-in-law (Kristin Scott Thomas) spend the rest of the film hissing at each other. Biel and Scott Thomas clearly have a ball with their bitch-fest, aided and abetted gleefully by director Stephan Elliott (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert), who adapted Coward’s 1924 play with Sheridan Jobbins. Colin Firth is also good as the father-in-law, a rich bohemian who likes to tinker with engines. Vastly preferable to Brideshead Revisited (93 min.).
