Your comments lead me to the conclusion that your staff supports the idea of phasing out rent control, with regards to the debate you had over Proposition 98. Rent control is an imperfect but effective way of allowing renters of limited income to have a stable home. For a city like San Francisco, rent control is vital to protecting the city's dwindling lower and even middle income populations. For Oakland, we rely on our rent control and other tenants rights to keep our rental housing affordable. If Oakland rents went up and landlords would be free to evict at will, where would the diversity of our city go? Maybe the Express and its' authors would rather whitewash this rich yet troubled town we live in as a solution to its' problems. Yet another reason why I never pick up this paper and think it's a corporate rag for wannabe-hipsters.
