Writer-director Tony Gilroy goes to the Michael Clayton business espionage well once too often with the uninvolving comic love story of two government-turned-corporate spies (Clive Owen and Julia Roberts). They meet cute in Dubai and gradually get down to double-crossing rival mega-corporations — and each other — over a secret formula for a shampoo that cures baldness. Gilroy’s question is a good one: Can two professional deceivers actually trust each other in love? Everything hangs on the chemistry between Roberts and Owen, and it’s about as “natural” as a honey mango moisturizing cream. So will it finally become a romantic comedy or a bloodbath? Unfortunately, neither. Solid support by scene-stealer Paul Giamatti, Gilroy regular Tom Wilkinson, Carrie Preston, and Denis O’Hare (125 min.).
