Duo is the OaklandArtGallery's take on the abstract featuring works by two local painters. Mike Henderson's pieces are thick chunks of color, slathered and scraped onto the canvas in striated blocks. "At the Break" features snowy whites and blues, with a surprise of orange in the upper corner, drawing the viewer's eyes up and out. "Breaking Away" is his most figurative work -- although there's not much figure here. A green bottle or building stands against a field of startling red, underneath a muddy ochre sun. Amy Kaufman's graphic pastels hearken to the same era of mid-century abstractionism, but are smeary and foggy compared to Henderson's aggressive solidity. They are graphic without the typical clean unsullied lines, but with the repetition of geometric pattern and uncomplicated colors. Most striking is her large scale "Array," a wall-sized charcoal of dark and light stripes in eight towering columns. Through January 10 at 199 Kahn's Alley, or 510-637-0395.
