Dry Powder Staff Pick

When: June 22-July 29 2018
Price: $33-$65
An elephant threatens enterprise in Sarah Burgess’ combative, 90-minute, no-intermission play Dry Powder. Always impressive Aldo Billingslea plays Rick, head of the fictional New York private equity firm KMM. He’s face-planted himself on the PR platform by engaging the animal kingdom’s largest land mammal for a corporate party while simultaneously laying off employees. Outraged at media commentary, he nevertheless initiates a leveraged buyout of a California luggage company that includes more firing. Seth (angsty Jeremey Kahn) is cliché capitalist No. 1, the “good guy” with morals that crumble under pressure. Jenny (boldly dramatic and comedic Emily Jeanne Brown) is Seth’s math-wicked coworker for whom bottom line is queen and brutal honesty is the output. Toss in targeted luggage company CEO Jeff (a convincing Kevin Kemp) and enough financial gibberish to be realistic, and the four-square skirmish between high-level financiers unleashes fury. Director Jennifer King knows when to yank the leash, which means the production from start to end rides — but never topples off — a ridgeline between ruthless reality and zealous moralizing. There are no heroes here; just four folks floundering in cash-like capital that’s otherwise known as dry powder.
