Dry Land

Largely taking place in a high school locker room, Dry Land offers an almost voyeuristic view into the challenges of teenage womanhood. The plot centers on one character’s desire to end an unwanted pregnancy, and an unexpected friendship that blooms in the process. Beyond the topic of abortion and the swim team setting, this is very much a play about the ways young women relate to one another — vulnerability, pressure, complexity, and all. Bay Area rising star Ariel Craft directs, and this will likely be the last chance for folks to see her work on this side of the bay for quite some time, as she’ll take the helm at Cutting Ball Theater in San Francisco as artistic director this year. The playwright, Ruby Rae Spiegel, started writing Dry Land when she was finishing her sophomore year of high school, and the initial run earned a rave review in The New York Times.
