Drive-By Truckers

When: Wed., Feb. 13, 8 p.m. 2008
Price: $25

As the indie set's premier country-rock outfit, Drive-By Truckers know what's in a name. In 2001, the Athens, Georgia band, then five years old and two records deep, released a two-disc opuscalled Southern Rock Opera. It wasn't a rock opera so much as an irony-swathed celebration of LynyrdSkynyrd -- a very real influence on the Truckers -- but it got the point across. So, too, did 1998 debut Gangstabilly, 1999 follow-up Pizza Deliverance, and live record Alabama Ass Whuppin'. The group writes songs and lyrics as smartly as it does album titles, and has consistently set the bar for contemporary hard-rock, Southern or not. Last month's Brighter Than Creation's Dark, in fact, has already made a claim for album of the year. Catch the Drive-By Truckers playing in-store at Amoeba Records (2455 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley) on Thursday, February 14. 6 p.m., free.
