Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Thriller
A trio of stridently weird performances — from Nicolas Cage, William Fichtner, and David Morse — brighten this otherwise rote actioner, in which a dead truck driver (Cage) breaks out of hell to rescue his granddaughter from a Satanic cult. Despite the unhinged playing and some good stunt work, this mostly feels like a big-budget update of Seventies exploitation trash, dry-cleaned of the regional character and hand-worn feel that made some of those films crudely endearing. The movie was shot in 3-D to enhance a few CGI sequences; they come off as less cynical and synthetic than the script's blithe misanthropy. Patrick Lussier directed. (104 min.)
