Re: “Community Coalition and Wood Partners Strike Deal on Massive 13th Street  Housing and Retail Project

Where else in Oakland would the community allow a whole block project without asking for community benefits that were outlined in the area specific plan voted on by the City Council 2 years ago? What is dismaying is that the community had to organize and threaten legal actions before serious discussion took place. Chinatown is a community and it has the right to receive the same respect as any other neighborhood.

Re: “Oakland's Anti-Coal Activists Decry ‘Deceptive’ Mailer

I think they may be in violation of the City's lobbyist ordinance. If not we need to revise it, this large of a mailer represents significant money. We should know who funded it.

Re: “An Oakland Chef Wants to Decolonize Cinco de Mayo

Sorry we were out of town. If you can catch Prof. Salomon's talks on Gov. Pico at the Peralta Hacienda or African American Museum, it gives another layer to the complexity of California. But Dominica's cooking and changing specials are reason to celebrate every day.

Re: “Oakland Favors Bank Over Bus Riders

"30TH STREET BUS STOP (51A) MEETING, WEDNESDAY, NOV 18TH, 6 PM, 401 29TH ST, #111, ACCE (Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment formerly known as ACORN) is holding a community meeting at my medical office: My friends know that I have helped start a new practice in Oakland so I can continue to see some of my old patients a few days a week. We are one of those rare private practices seeing underfunded MediCAL patients and also give immigrant and disability exams. So I was pretty upset to hear about the City eliminating our bus stop without consulting the many medical providers nearby and other merchants. Many patients beyond our office will have to walk the equivalent of 3 blocks more and when the new Sprouts is built, parking in our area will only get worse. Eliminating a bus stop does not make sense for a just and green city; it puts an unnecessary burden on our low income and senior patients." Dr Floyd Huen

Re: “Updated: For Quan and Perata, It’s a Two-Person Race

This race is going to be won by hard campaigning. Jean Quan is going to be outspent by 5:1, but is literally in a dead heat with Don Perata because hundreds of neighborhood activists have been working on her campaign for over a year. Big outside donations for either Perata or Kaplan can't buy that.

Re: “The Perata Gang that Couldn’t Shoot Straight

Seems like this is going to be the next smear? Can't have it both ways. Jean Quan was on the School Board when Jerry Brown and Ignacio negotiated the police pensions.

She was on the City Council when the state takeover took place. School activists will tell you when the district offered teachers a 24% raise because their antiquated accounting systems over stated their revenues, she was one of the few to question the county, state and outside auditors.

If you watch the Finance Committee meetings at all you would have seen her lead the fight to rebuild reserves and pay back internal fund loans and take on the former city manager.
