Drama, Suspense/Thriller
Maria Bello pulls out all the stops in her portrayal of Nancy Stockwell, a wrist-cutting, pain-junkie housewife whose “lost weekend” visit to her like-minded Internet buddy (Jason Patric) sends her already-anxious husband (Rufus Sewell) over the edge. Quite the carnival of middle-class misery, although the screenplay — by first-timers Pamela Cuming and Lee Ross, directed by Swedish import rock-vid and TV commercial honcho Johan Renck — clouds matters further with a blizzard of flashbacks and –forwards. Bello’s perf is the only reason to sit through this. The setting, a snowy wintertime in Saskatchewan shot in cooled-out tones by cinematographer Christopher Doyle, looks like a suburb of Cronenberg-ia (102 min.).
