Down the Congo Line

When: Sat., April 14, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $15-$20

On any given day, sounds of spirited drumming and dancing stream from the upper-story windows of the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts (1428 Alice St., Oakland) -- it's simply impossible to pass by without dancing a few steps. When Dimensions Dance Theater takes the Center's stage this Saturday, Apr. 14, in its show Down the Congo Line, the exhilarating rhythms of New Orleans, Brazil, and Congo will fill the air. Performed to live music by MJ's Brass Boppers, LaTanya Tigner'sThe Last Dance ties New Orleans funeral rituals to their African origins.Tigner dances solo in Ndozi, accompanied on drums by Kiazi Malonga and FuaDia Conga. Brazilian drummers and percussionists provide a lively rhythm for Isuara Oliveira's Congo in Brazil, which blends movement drawn from Afro-Brazilian maculelê,maracatu, capoeira, and samba. Get ready to dance in the aisles. 8 p.m., $15-$20. 1-800-838-3006 or
