Doug Mack

When: Tue., April 10, 7 p.m. 2012

There's an entire cable channel dedicated to travel, but that won't give you what Doug Mack can: a tongue-in-cheek, Julie and Julia-reminiscent guide to Europe, written by a regular, Middle American guy. Europe on 5 Wrong Turns a Day: One Man, Eight Countries, One Vintage Travel Guide offers everything the modern traveler needs to know about Manneken-Pis, the true cost of gelato in Italy, and the beaten path, revisited and beaten down some more for good measure. As the story goes, Mack stumbled upon a 1963 edition of Frommer's classic Europe on Five Dollars a Day, and was inspired to revisit the Old World using only the original guide and the letters and postcards of his parents, who took the trek in 1967. No Internet, no updated guides, no problem. Mack appears at Books Inc. (1760 Fourth St., Berkeley) on Tuesday, Apr. 10. 7 p.m., free. 510-525-7777 or
