Impressively histrionic, though petite, chamber drama details a power struggle in an early-‘60s-era Roman Catholic school between an imperious, monumentally repressed nun (Meryl Streep) and a kind priest with a guilty conscience (Philip Seymour Hoffman), while a conscientious young nun (Amy Adams) looks on askance. Writer-director John Patrick Shanley, adapting his play, sets up the suspected molestation of a student as bait for showboat perfs by all concerned, particularly Streep and Viola Davis as the kid’s mother. Has much more in common with The Devil Wears Prada than, say, Going My Way — but it’s fun to watch the she-wolf snarl (104 min.).
