Double Moiré

When: Sun., May 3, 4:30 p.m. 2009
Price: $15

Anyone familiar with the work of Al Young or Amiri Baraka could tell you that certain poets bring a real musical quality to their craft, placing as much emphasis on rhythm and intonation as on figurative language. Local poets Michael McClure, Richard Silberg, Avotcja, and Opal Palmer Adisa all fit into that jazz school of spoken-word. They'll perform this weekend at "Literary Groove of Jazz," a special series presented by Berkeley's Jazzschool (2087 Addison St.). It kicks off with a showcase on Friday, May 1 ( 8 p.m.), continues on Saturday with Michael Zilber's Billy Collins Project (based on eleven poems by Billy Collins), and culminates Sunday (4:30 p.m.) with a premiere of the newly commissioned work Double Moiré, written by McClure and saxophonist George Brooks. $15.
