Dot VOM self-describes its sound as “a valentine card in a trash can.” Hailing from San Francisco, the band makes echoey dream pop with a hint of the grotesque. That’s dot VOM, as in vomit, anyhow. It’s a little sweet, a little sickening — lead singer and omnichord player Dany likens their music to “when you wake up in the morning and you’re throwing up but you can’t tell if you just ate something red last night or you’re throwing up blood.” The music video for their song “Sad is Fine” embodies this spirit, juxtaposing glittering disco lights and shimmery fabric with the interior of a bathroom stall, a disembodied bearded mouth singing through a glory hole. An unidentified, nail-polished hand gives the mouth a shave, applies lipstick, smears food on it, and various other actions that grow increasingly more disturbing throughout the length of the video. Similarly, the song sounds like a pretty shoegaze number on the surface — but if you take a closer listen, the lyrics tell an unsettling story of someone in a toxic relationship dying to be used. Get a taste of dot Vom’s icky-sweet aesthetic at the release show for their new EP, Melatonin, which is out this Friday via Text Me Records.
