Of the roughly 1,000 students who started ninth grade at South Central Los Angeles' LockeHigh School in 2001, only about 240 graduated in 2005. Of those, only about thirty qualified to attend a state university, according to journalist Donna Foote, who taught there. At Orinda Books (276 Village Square, Orinda) on May 8, she discusses her book Relentless Pursuit: A Year in the Trenches with Teach for America. 4 p.m.
