DJ Spinna

When: Fri., Sept. 28, 10 p.m. 2012
Price: $15

Though he's known as a resolutely underground artist -- "underground" in this case meaning that he cuts mixes for small indie labels and chooses collaborators based on talent rather than potential revenue -- New York-based DJ Spinna has cultivated a large cult of adoration in the hip-hop and house scenes. His podcasts mix upbeat soul samples with four-on-the-floor beats, often blurring the delineations between hip-hop and disco. One of the best, made to commemorate the 76th birthday of deceased soul singer Marvin Gaye, kicks off with the deep, baritone voice of former Soul Train host Don Cornelius, which bleeds right into Gaye's B-side seduction ballad "Feel My Love Inside." Spinna has long been known for experimentation, but he's not a mash-up artist, per se. Rather, his mixes tend to be subtle and tasteful, blending vintage soul samples with contemporary scratches or beats while preserving the old records' integrity. He'll perform with DJs Cecil and Cali of thePeople at 330 Ritch (330 Ritch St., San Francisco) on Friday, Sept. 28. 10 p.m., $15.
