DJ Krush 20th Anniversary Showcase

When: Sat., Feb. 25, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $17.50

If anyone could be credited with rendering the craft of turntablism into a higher art form, it would have to be DJ Krush (aka Hideaki Ishii), a 49-year-old who's famous for blending obscure jazz, soul, nature sounds, new-age oms, and murky strings into his music. Like a research student doing field recordings with directional microphones, Krush is absolutely fascinated by the natural environment. His mixes are elaborate landscapes of scavenged sounds, combined with deep, visceral hip-hop beats. No wonder Krush has earned such a devoted following. Now nine albums, several mixtapes, and one DVD biopic into his career, Krush is still considered one of the great trailblazers of Japanese hip-hop. He's right on the cusp of releasing yet another solo project, parts of which he's premiering during a twenty-year anniversary tour. His Bay Area stop happens on Saturday, Feb. 25, at Mezzanine (444 Jessie St., San Francisco), at an event sponsored by local promotion company Blasthaus, which specializes in left-field DJ and dance events. 9 p.m., $17.50.
