Diaspora Voiced

When: Wednesdays, 6 p.m. Continues through Nov. 1
Immigration and identity are crucial issues these days, in the USA and internationally. Diaspora Voiced, a juried group show, explores the immigrant experience through the sensibilities of nineteen artists from the diverse Bay Area: 826 Valencia Tenderloin Podcast Project (with artpaul cartier), Jennifer Berkowitz, Cynthia Brannvall, Alex da Silva, Najib Joe Hakim, Kacy Jung, Kay Kang, Pantea Karimi, Natasha Kohli, Purin Phanichphant, Mayela Rodriguez, Joanna Ruckman, Azin Seraj, Elizabeth Sher, Inez Storer, Rupy C. Tut, Camilo Villa, Sharon Virtue, and Adreinne Waheed. Juried by artist/curators Demetri Broxton, Mayumi Hamanaka, and Daniel Nevers, and curated by Michelle Nye, the show makes a forceful case for tolerance and diversity in our intemperate era. Immigrants’ struggles to assimilate the new countries’ cultures while maintaining a foothold in their birthplace cultures are presented here with visual flair, imagination and compassion: visual artifacts serve here as object lessons for the far-flung family of man.
