Desaparecidos

When: Tue., Aug. 28, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $25

The quavering, quivering, impassioned voice of ConorOberst may forever be date-stamped to the late-Nineties/early-2000s Omaha sound, most notably in his indie-folk-rock band Bright Eyes. But Oberst had a harder edge to him, and all that angst bubbled to the surface in his post-hardcore side project Desaparecidos, which released just one album, Read Music/Speak Spanish, in early 2002. Bursting with raw guitar, driving rhythms, and earnest tirades against American capitalism and suburban culture, the album was critically hailed but also came at an awkward time, in the patriotic atmosphere of post-9/11. But ten years later, with the economy in the tank and an election on the horizon, a reunion tour seems apt. The band -- featuring original lineup Oberst, guitarist Denver Dalley, bassist Landon Hedges, drummer Matt Baum, and keyboardist Ian McElroy -- just released two new singles and is now playing a handful of dates, including Wednesday, Aug. 29, at The Regency Ballroom (1300 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco). And to complete the early-2000s indie-rock vibe, Santa Rosa's The Velvet Teen supports. 8 p.m., $25. TheRegencyBallroom.com
