If summer has you feeling some type of way, Derek King’s latest EP, 1995, features six solid bangers to send to your special person alongside that late-night “U up?” text. At only 22 years old, the R&B singer-songwriter from Antioch has already gone on tour with major Bay Area acts, including Sage the Gemini and Kalin and Myles. Like his last project, Fake ID, the new EP showcases King’s smooth vocals meshed with upbeat claps that give it that distinct Bay Area tone we all (hella) love. Each song is written by King himself and reveals a different unapologetic ode to the fine lines of relationships, success, and growing up. “We wanted to vibe out a little more and get in touch with our inner feelings,” King explained. On Friday, the young artist will be at Complex Oakland for a meet-and-greet followed by a performance launching 1995.
