Denny Zeitlin

When: Sat., Dec. 1, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $20

Assorted performers hear the "don't quit your day job" mantra -- Bay Area-based jazz pianist Denny Zeitlin took that aphorism seriously. Since getting his M.D. in 1964, Zeitlin has balanced the dual careers of psychiatrist and jazz musician. With trios that included Charlie Haden and Jerry Granelli, he released a few fine discs on Columbia Records in the Sixties; in the Seventies, Zeitlin explored synthesizers, culminating in him composing and performing the soundtrack for director Philip Kaufman's 1978 remake of the sci-fi classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers; and he also wrote music for Sesame Street. Zeitlin's approach melds the captivating lyricism of Bill Evans and John Lewis with the edgy, percussive key-cracking of McCoy Tyner and Don Pullen. See him in a rare solo concert at Piedmont Piano Company (1728 San Pablo Ave., Oakland) on Saturday, Dec. 1. 8 p.m., $20.
