Dennis Bernstein

When: Sun., April 29, 3 p.m. 2012

Special Ed: Voices From a Hidden Classroom explores the lives of the real New York public schoolchildren that author Dennis J. Bernstein once taught. Bernstein, who went on to become an investigative journalist specializing in human rights, and who now lives in San Francisco, presents his first full poetry collection, where classroom education takes a backseat to real-life issues like hunger, drugs, weapons, and visits from the police. And, of course, how to stay strong and survive. At Diesel (5433 College Ave., Oakland) on Sunday, Apr. 29. 3 p.m., free. 510-653-9965 or DieselBookstore.com
