Comedy drama, Horror, Thriller
Contemporary Polish homage to Michal Waszynski’s 1937 release The Dybbuk is less an out-and-out horror film than an eerie social commentary, as a wedding in the countryside is interrupted by the restless spirit of a buried Jewish maiden killed in the Holocaust. Director Marcin Wrona, adapting the screenplay with writer Pawel Maslona from a novel by Piotr Rowicki, makes the most of the unwitting bride and groom (Agnieszka Zulewksa and Israeli actor Itay Tiran) and the bride’s churlish father (Andrzej Grabowski), a vodka-swilling bully who would rather annul his daughter’s marriage and pretend the haunting never happened rather than acknowledge the injustices of the past. The mood is dreamlike and convulsive. The past cannot and will not remain covered up (94 min.).
