Horror, Thriller
More interesting than any “cops-and-exorcists” crime story has any right to be -- but that’s not saying much. Eric Bana and Edgar Ramírez turn in honest if limited performances as an NYPD homicide detective and a hippie Jesuit priest, respectively, on the trail of grisly goings-on in the Bronx. Something about psycho Iraq vets and creepy house painters. Horror/thriller director Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose), adapting the real-life tale of former police officer Ralph Sarchie, lays on the tried-and-true shock cuts and musical cues, including more Jim Morrison tunes than in any movie since The Doors. None of this is enough to make our heads spin around. Screenplay by Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman. Olivia Munn and Sean Harris costar (118 min.).
