Re: “The Uptown Apartments Look Nice, But Are Still Mostly Empty

I can't speak for the Uptown, because I'm not a resident there, but I do live just two blocks away in the Uptown area, at the Oaksterdam building.

I agree that the rents seemed too high at the Uptown. I never considered it because of that. I also don't believe that most people have an interest in the offered amenities, and perhaps if not for the added overhead of the 24-hr doorman and the 24-hr gym facility, among perhaps others, they could have made the rent cheaper and attracted more tenants faster.

I DO want to say that the crime stereotype is bogus, and the only reason people stay away from this area of Oakland is because they're stupid. I actually do research before moving somewhere instead of depending on rumors circulated for 10+ years. Putting together info from locals I've spoken with and police reports, it's easy to see that this area is actually quite safe. Oakland does have terrible crime statistics, but it should be common wisdom to know that the statistical average isn't spread out evenly over the entire area of the city. Don't live in the wrong neighborhood and you won't get mugged. The area of Berkeley that I used to live in was MUCH worse than this, and Berkeley enjoys a better reputation than Oakland.

This area is unfortunately very quiet at night, but opening a coffee shop isn't going to fix it. Moving local residents in is the way to keep activity here in the evening. There are already a number of small cafes and restaurants within the reach of just a few blocks. If they had CUSTOMERS, then maybe they'd stay open later.
