Historical drama, War
Director Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai, Glory) takes a straightforward, middle-of-the-road approach to the true story of a group of Jewish partisans fighting the Nazi Germans in occupied Belarus during World War II. It’s helped along by strong, uncomplicated performances from Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber as two of the Brothers Bielski, leaders of the Bielski Otriad (brigade), and by the forest scenery (shot on location in Lithuania). Nothing unexpected crops up, except that in the tradition of Exodus, Munich, etc., Jews fight back. Would make a fitting “final” Holocaust film, but don’t hold your breath. Also with Allan Corduner, Alexa Davalos, and Mark Feuerstein. Screenplay by Clayton Frohman and Zwick, from Nechama Tec’s book (137 min.).
