Filmmaker Alex Winter’s documentary about Ross Ulbricht and the online contraband drug market Silk Road is a crime story that widens out into a debate over who controls the future of the Internet – for many people, that’s the same as the future itself. In one digestible and well organized package using TV news footage as well as interviews with a wide array of talking heads, Winter’s doc details not only Silk Road’s pre-eminence in the illegal drug trade on the Darknet (before it was shut down in 2013), but Ulbricht’s background as an advocate of Internet anonymity and freedom from government control. The “libertarian-stoner” effect is accentuated by the voice of actor Keanu Reeves – who starred with Winter in the Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure comedies – as the doc’s narrator. A sequel is already called for. The debate goes on (90 min.).
