In 2012, the hottest sport in the world will be Death Race, at least according to director Paul W.S. Anderson’s liberal remake of Roger Corman’s 1975 B-movie classic of the same name. The only way for prisoners of Terminal Island to escape their incarceration is to participate in gladiatorial, high-octane races that generate big bucks on-line. For Jensen Ames (Jason Statham), a man framed for murdering his wife, the terms prove irresistible. What follows is unbridled masturbatory fun complete with race rules that were obviously generated by the filmmakers to make a better video-game spin-off. Anderson, who is responsible for some of the best bad B-movies of his generation, including the Resident Evil series, proves yet again he’s what Corman would’ve been if given a Hollywood-grade budget (89 min.).
