Dead Winter Carpenters

When: Sat., April 27, 9 p.m. 2019
Price: $13.00 - $16.00
This hard-to-pigeonhole quintet from Lake Tahoe is doing its best to destroy the preconceptions people have about bluegrass music. The band — guitarist and songwriter Jesse Dunn; singer and fiddler Jenni Charles; stand up and electric bass player Dave Lockheart; singer and lead guitarist Nick Swimley and drummer Brendan Smith — may bill itself as a bluegrass jam band, but its arrangements include a host of genres that have little to do with what the average roots fan might expect to hear. Ragtime, blues, reggae, honky-tonk country, folk, rock and old time string band music all come together in a swirling confluence of styles that tips its hat to tradition, while pounding out a driving dance beat. Its last album, 2016’s Washhoe, earned the band critical raves and led to a collaboration with local blues roots heavy Jackie Green, who contributes Hammond B3 to their brilliant new single, “Roller Coaster.”
