Dawn Upshaw & The Australian Chamber Orchestra

When: Thu., June 16, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $44, $58, $72, $88

The second year of Cal Performances' new Ojai North!mini-festival soars with the presence of soprano Dawn Upshaw & The Australian Chamber Orchestra. The most traditional music on the program comes via an arrangement of Grieg's String Quartet in G Minor. Moving ahead in time, Upshaw, one of the finest and most endearing lyric sopranos of the past quarter century, explores an arrangement of Five Hungarian Folk Songs by Bartók. Then come Webern's Five Pieces for Strings, excerpts from Crumb's Black Angels, and a premiere of a new work by jazz artist Maria Schneider. Translation: luscious fare for those who want more than biscuits and tea on a silver platter. It all happens atZellerbach Hall (Bancroft Way below Telegraph Ave., UC Berkeley) on Tuesday, June 14. 8 pm., $44-$88. 510-642-9988 or
