Action, Adventure, Science fiction
Inconclusive sequel to the 2011 version of the simian revenge sci-fi potboiler raises a few philosophical and moral questions, but mostly settles for routine-looking battles between the scruffy surviving humans and the army of angry apes led by hyper-smart chimpanzee Caesar (Andy Serkis again). Production values of a high standardness, featuring a ramshackled San Francisco and a Marin County rain forest that never was and never will be. Aside from Serkis the acting is similarly underwhelming, beginning with Jason Clarke and Keri Russell as good humans and Gary Oldman as the other kind. What happened to the bright ideas that screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver had from the first film? More of a prequel to the next Apes movie than something you’d want to sit through. Directed by Matt Reeves (130 min.).
