David James’s Russian Telegraph

When: Fri., July 12, 8 p.m. 2019
Guitarist, vocalist, and composer David James is a master of greasy grooves and irresistible funk, though he’s equally capable of contributing a jolt of slinky intelligence to jazz and Afrobeat settings (like his long-running association with Afrofunk Experience). Russian Telegraph features some of his most intricate and expansive arrangements, with a killer cast of players drawn from other ensembles he’s worked with closely. From the Curtis Bumpy outfit there’s bassist Keith McArthur and keyboardist Jordan Glasgow, while the tuneful Beth Custer Ensemble adds the great namesake clarinetist, trumpeter Chris Grady, drummer John Hanes, and vocalist Diana Mangano. The group also performs July 20 at the Red House Speakeasy in San Francisco, and Bird & Beckett on Sept. 21.
