While we live in a system, and work for employers, that pit workers against each other over jobs all the time, especially in working class communities like Oakland, the big question is what we do about it. Getting organized and finding common ground with each other is the only way working people can get some power in a situation like this. There are good examples of unions and community organizations that are doing it, like the hotel workers in San Francisco, or the Molders in the East Bay. I've written a lot about this.
