Dave Chappelle

When: Feb. 9-13, 8 & 11 p.m. 2010
Price: $55

Famous for his pop-star impersonations and postmodern caricatures (e.g., the black-white-supremacist Clayton Bigsby), Dave Chappelle falls somewhere between George Carlin and Richard Pryor in the spectrum of comic greatness. He's smart, he's smirky, and he goes just past the edge of political correctness. Best of all, he takes comedy into the realm of performance art. Chappelle's sudden departure to South Africa in 2003 only added to his mystique, spawning rumors of drug addiction that he later denied. In later interviews, the comedian has explained that he likes to cut his own cloth:. He'll give up a Comedy Central show in a heartbeat if the network execs don't let him steer its content. Chapelle performs this week at the New Parish (579 18th thSt., Oakland). He did a secret show there last year for a packed house, delivering a solid three hours' worth of material. This time it's open to everyone. Shows at 8 p.m. and & 11 p.m. through from Monday, Feb. 8, through Saturday., Feb. 13. . $55. or -- Rachel Swan
