Re: “Landlord Of West Oakland Building Destroyed By Fire Was Working To Evict Tenants

Ilona Sturm,

When this article was published, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office hadn't yet identified the two victims located in the building. Now the number has grown to four victims. One has been identified as Edwarn Anderson. The other three haven't been identified yet.

The Chronicle just published a story about Mr. Anderson: http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/W-Oakla…

Re: “Town Business: Developer Wants to Stick MacArthur BART Tower's Affordable Units Entirely in Bottom Quarter of Building

David Long: the developer hasn't offered any of the listed community benefits in this article. Rather, the developer agreed to a small percentage of affordable units and a project labor agreement in 2008.

Almost everything else has been requested by neighbors, the planning commission, city staff, and Councilmember Kalb.

Re: “Anne Kirkpatrick Picked to Lead Oakland Police. Here's What We Know About Her.

Thanks for the comment Hugh Morrison,

Bratton himself is a defender of broken windows-style policing. Here's an op-ed he wrote two years ago about it: http://www.wsj.com/articles/william-bratto…

Also, Kirkpatrick refers to Bratton as a practitioner and promoter of broken windows theory in her Chicago police chief application which is linked in the article above.

I'm not saying Zimring wrong; in fact, there are other people more closely associated with the development of broken windows theory, and its use by major departments. But Bratton is associated with it.

Re: “Oakland Firefighters Say Their Department Is So Badly Managed, Ghost Ship Warehouse Wasn't Even In Its Inspection Database

Charlie Pine,

I relied on the city administration's October 24, 2016 Semi-Annual Vacancy Report.

It shows that the Oakland Police Department currently has only 2 vacant sworn police officer positions.

The Fire Department has 63 sworn firefighter positions vacant right now, according to that same report.

Another document I have from the Fire Department shows that they filled one position since then, bringing their sworn staffing vacancy to 62.

I'm comparing apples to apples.

I invite readers to review the document here: https://oakland.legistar.com/LegislationDe…

Re: “Alameda Health System Leaders Say Hospitals Are 'Safe Spaces' for Undocumented Immigrants

Jason Matthews,

If you're implying that U.S. healthcare is expensive because of services used by undocumented immigrants, than you're incorrect.

The drivers of healthcare costs are many (http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/health…) and the U.S. is more expensive than comparable OECD nations. But it's not because of undocumented immigrants or healthcare services like Medicaid.

Re: “Sounds of the Town in Revolt: Music Enlivened Anti-Trump Protests — and OPD Noticed

Kevin Mulvey, Pleasanton police were present at the Oakland protest, per a mutual aid agreement, and one of their vehicles was damaged.

Re: “Oakland Sergeant Says Police Chief, Mayor Retaliated Against Him For Investigating Cop Who May Have Killed Wife

Clarence C. Johnson,

You are incorrect. We wrote:

"Later, in June, when news of the Guap case was making international headlines, media outlets also reported that Gantt was being investigated for allegedly mishandling evidence in homicide cases. He was eventually cleared by the district attorney of any criminal wrongdoing on June 23."
