A brilliant but quixotic Chinese graduate student scientist named Liu Xing (actor Liu Ye from Curse of the Golden Flower) arrives in a small American city to begin research in a university astrophysics lab, but the head of the department (Aidan Quinn) throws obstacles in his way, as does life in the USA in general. This leads to tragedy. Writer-director Chen Shi-Zheng, best known for staging operas like The Peony Pavilion, spins the sad story of Liu Xing into a visually stylized, thought-provoking examination of the perils of cross-culturalism –- helped greatly by Meryl Streep’s performance as an overbearing college-town do-gooder. Plenty to chew on (90 min.).
