Dann Zinn Quintet

When: Fri., Oct. 25, 8 p.m. 2019
Price: $20.00
While maintaining a full schedule as one of the region’s most esteemed jazz educators — he’s director of jazz studies at Cal State East Bay and director of the SFJAZZ High School All-Star Combo — Alameda saxophonist Dann Zinn has created an extraordinary body of music inspired by the crystalline Northern European melodic forms associated with the label ECM. But his scorching lyricism is hardly bound by geography, and his new ensemble builds on his longstanding creative connection with Australian-born guitarist Chris Robinson, a highly versatile player who contributed to Zinn’s acclaimed 2015 trio session Shangri La with drum legend Peter Erskine. The new quintet also features bass maestro Jeff Denson, Salvadoran-American drummer Marcelo Perez, and percussionist Brian Rice, who’s deeply versed in Brazilian rhythms. Premiering a set of new Zinn compositions, the group introduces a world-jazz sound related to the Zawinal Syndicate and the Pat Metheny Group.
