Re: “Oakland Slow to Okay More Public Urban Gardens

I strongly support efforts to increase farming in Oakland as a major part of our focus on food justice. As mayor I will expedite the approval process and help identify publicly and privately owned land that can be used for food production. Dan Siegel

Re: “Oakland Cops Think City Is Too Liberal

I sympathize with officers who complain about weak internal leadership and Oakland's inept and inconsistent elected officials. Department leadership needs to set clear standards and hold everyone accountable to them. Officers who abuse citizens or neglect their jobs should work elsewhere. Officers committed to working with our community to protect people's lives, property, and constitutional rights should receive positive recognition within the department and from the residents of Oakland. Oakland must finally satisfy the requirements of the negotiated settlement agreement, end federal court oversight, and stop spending millions of dollars to resolve cases of police abuse.

Re: “Why a Curfew Is Unnecessary

Gammon is right on this issue. A youth curfew is unnecessary and counter-productive. The police have more than enough "tools" to manage people actually involved in committing crimes. A curfew law, just like a gang injunction, provides a justification for making contact with people who have not committed crimes. In the real world, it is an opportunity for abuse, harassment, and discrimination against young people who live in poor and nonwhite communities. We need to stop fooling ourselves. The only program to reduce is JOBS and EDUCATION!

Re: “Wednesday Must Read: Brown’s Tax Plan in Trouble; California Schools Rank 30th in Academics, 2nd in Teacher Pay

Lawngun's comments are far too simplistic. I have worked cooperatively with the Oakland police on several important projects over the past 20 years, including the integration of the school district and housing authority departments with OPD and the development of Oakland's community policing program. I believe that most Oakland cops are decent people who do a good job. I am critical of police abuses, including the shootings of unarmed people and overly aggressive crowd control tactics during demonstrations. The tens of millions of taxpayer dollars paid out to settle these cases prove that my views are neither out of the mainstream nor wrong. I hope to see OPD end the practices that lead to these cases and have no intention of slapping anyone in the face.
