Dan Melchior

When: Thu., Jan. 31, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $10
Hailing from a village just outside London, Dan Melchior has long made music closely aligned with American garage rock, both as a solo artist and as a collaborator. But his most recent and incredibly fecund project, Dan Melchior und Das Menace, doesn’t settle on a single sound, instead shuffling in and out of genres with avant-garde abandon. Take his 2012 album, The Backward Path: “The Night Comes In” is a slow, acoustic number painted with washes of lamenting blues guitar, while “Atomizer” is a chugging, gritty riff fest. Even his vocals are pleasantly inconsistent — he often warbles and moans and screeches at a level just shy of Yoko Ono. Melchior’s wife and frequent collaborator, Letha, was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago, and the couple has offset mounting medical costs through benefit shows. His next one, hosted by Stranded Records, will happen at the White Horse Bar (655 Telegraph Ave., Oakland), and will also feature Bill Direen, Little Queenie, and Musk on Thursday, Jan. 31. 8 p.m., $10.
