Writer-director Whit Stillman returns to the screen after a thirteen-year absence and finds the world much changed. Unfortunately for him (maker of the wonderful Metropolitan and The Last Days of Disco), he’s still using that declamatory-sentence bitchiness and epigram spouting for his story of a tight clique of coeds navigating the substandard gene pool at a small college back East. Who could have imagined we’d see Greta Gerwig as a prim, brittle bundle of nerves? And who expected Stillman’s once-delightful dialogue becoming an obstacle to our enjoyment of what essentially is a piece of genre entertainment? Violet (Gerwig) and her friends aren’t people, they’re a row of billboards. Costarring Analeigh Tipton, Carrie McLemore, and Megalyn Echikunwoke. (98 min.)
